Warning Signs of Arthritis in Dogs

Arthritis is one of the most common health problems that can affect our canine friends. As Fido grows older, he will still be the same loyal and lovable friend as always, but he may need some extra care. Below, a Georgian Bay, ON vet lists some early signs of arthritis in dogs.

Limping is one of the earliest signs of the condition. At first, Fido may not limp consistently: he may, for instance, favor one leg for a few moments when he first gets up. The limp may go away after your dog moves around a bit, but over time, it may become more consistent and more pronounced.

Difficulty Climbing

If Fido has arthritis, it may become harder for him to climb onto the sofa or bed, if he’s allowed. Your canine pal may also begin to have difficulty going up and down stairs, or getting in and out of the car.

Lack Of Interest In Play

Your lovable pet may have been full of energy when he was young, but as he ages, he’ll slow down. Arthritis can make it hard for your pet to chase after his favorite ball, so he may lose interest in playing.

Dogs are like people in many ways. One trait we share with our furry friends is a tendency to become irritable when we don’t feel well. If your pup seems unusually cranky lately, he may be dealing with pain from arthritis. Fido may also flinch or even snap when you touch a sore spot.

Fatigue can be another early sign of arthritis in dogs. Fido may be worn out after a short walk, and could spend a lot more time napping than he once did. (Tip: a good, orthopedic doggy bed will keep your furry friend more comfortable.)

There are now many treatment options available that can help keep your loyal pet more comfortable. If you suspect that your canine buddy is developing arthritis, have your vet examine him. Your vet will be able to offer specific recommendations for Fido’s diet and exercise regimen, and discuss various options for therapies that can help soothe his aches and pains.
