5 Adorable Ways to Pamper Your Guinea Pig

Have you recently adopted a Guinea pig? These tiny furballs are absolutely adorable, and can make wonderful little pets! In this article, a local Georgian Bay, ON vet offers some great tips on how to pamper Guinea pigs.

Buddies

Guinea pigs, or cavies, as they are also called, are very sociable, and enjoy having buddies to play with and cuddle up to. Two cavies are even cuter than one! Just be sure to choose only same-sex pairs, as otherwise you may end up with more furballs than you planned for.

Comfy Cage

Guinea pigs spend lots of time in their cages. Give your pets a roomy, comfy habitat. For one furball, you’ll want to choose one that is at least seven square feet. If you get more than one, you’ll need a bigger cage. Pick one with a second story to maximize your furry friends’ floor space. Your cavies will also need a good liner or substrate, such as fleece or aspen; a hidey-hole; a cozy, which is a tiny sleeping tent; a water bottle; and food dishes. You can also add a litterbox and hayrack. Ask your vet for more information.

Great Food

Proper nutrition will keep your pint-sized pets happy and healthy. Your cavies can have pellets for their main meals. You’ll also want to provide lots of grass hay, as well as fresh produce. Be sure to offer lots of foods that contain Vitamin C, which is crucial to these tiny furballs. Ask your vet for nutritional recommendations, including safe and unsafe foods, portion sizes, and snacks.

Toys!

Offer your miniature pets lots of cute toys to play with. Cavies need to chew to keep their teeth healthy, so include lots of chewable playthings. Cardboard items, such as the tubes from toilet-paper rolls, can make great Guinea pig toys. You can also give your tiny pals many wooden things, like spoons and blocks. Just be sure to avoid anything coated in decorative substances, like glitter or paint. You’ll also want to stay away from anything with sharp edges or small parts.

Playtime

Let your Guinea pigs have some supervised time out of their cage every day. Use this time to play with your little buddies, or even show them some cute tricks!
