Keeping Your Dog Safe When It’s Hot

When it comes to hot weather, our canine companions can use a little help staying cool and healthy. After all, they’re wearing a fur coat in the middle of summer! Here, your Georgian Bay, ON veterinarian provides a few quick tips for keeping Fido safe when it’s hot:

Provide your dog with a large bowl of cool, fresh water to drink from at all times. This way, he stays properly hydrated and his internal body temperature is regulated. Be sure to check your dog’s water dish frequently, and refill or refresh it if needed.

When your dog spends time outside, make sure there is at least one shady area for him to relax under and cool off. It’s a good idea to place another water dish here for your dog’s convenience. If there aren’t adequate shade trees in your yard, try making your own shade—set up a hammock, tent, or awning structure to give your pooch some relief.

Paw Pad Care

On extremely hot days, do your best to have your dog avoid asphalt surfaces like driveways and parking lots. These surfaces can heat up very quickly when the sun beats down on them, causing painful burns and blisters if a dog lingers too long. Try walking your pet on cooler grass areas instead of blacktop or concrete.

Pest Control

Summer, of course, is prime-time for pests to come out of the woodwork and latch on to our animal friends. The trick is having your dog wear seasonal or year-round preventive medications to ward off pests like fleas, mosquitos, ticks, and worms. This way, your pooch doesn’t have to deal with the dangerous infestations and infections these critters can cause. If your dog isn’t already set up with the proper preventives, let your veterinarian know right away.

Exercise Tips

By exercising your dog in the middle of the day, when temperatures are at their peak and the sun is blasting down directly overhead, you’re putting your pet at risk. Instead, try to exercise Fido during the morning or evening hours, when it’s cooler and the sun is lower in the sky. Your dog will thank you!
